Residential College 4 hosted the 2nd Asia-Pacific Region System Dynamics Conference of the System Dynamics Society from 19th February to 22nd February. The theme of the conference was “Charting a Path to a Humane and Sustainable Future: Asia’s Leadership Role”. NUS Deputy President (Academic Affairs) and Provost Prof Tan Eng Chye gave a welcome address as the Guest of Honour. We hosted 190 delegates from 20 countries over 4 days.
The first day of the conference started with a Student Research Colloquium where undergraduate and graduate students within and outside NUS presented their research based on systems thinking and System Dynamics.
Our Main Conference went on for next two days with plenary addresses by guest speakers Junko Edahiro, David Andersen, Robert Eberlein, Ignacio Martinez-Moyano, Lui Pao Chuen and Kishore Mahbubani. There were also two concurrent sessions and two sessions on Special Topics in System Dynamics. Topics covered included: Economics, Strategy, Performance and Cost in Health, Screening and Prevention in Health, Health in Singapore, Resources and the Environment, Business Operations and Public Policy etc.
It was an exciting moment when nearly 100 delegates to the conference endorsed the creation of the Asia-Pacific Coordinating Council (APCC). The APCC will be established as a Standing Committee of the System Dynamics Society. Assoc Prof Lakshminarayanan Samavedham has been appointed to serve as the Founding Chair of the APCC. We are also pleased to have provided the opportunity for ASEAN members to be better represented at the international Systems Dynamics Society, as well as to have inducted many of our RC4 students into the systems dynamics scholarly community!
In the last day of conference, multiple workshops were hosted which shared about real-world applications of system dynamics, innovative approaches of teaching system dynamics and introduction of new software platforms for developing system dynamics models.
